What are Pilates Principles?
Pilates is a method build on intentional movement. I studied Fletcher Pilates, which highlights 12 guiding movement principles that Ron Fletcher gathered from his learning with Joseph Pilates. Pilates is not just about the exercises you do, but how you do them. When you train with these principles in mind, your results will blow you away.
What is the Pilates principle of Awareness?
Awareness is about turning your brain off autopilot. If you don't know what you are trying to accomplish through an exercise, it will be very hard to accomplish that thing. When you move pay attention to these things:
Which muscles are actually working
Where you’re holding tension
How your posture feels
Whether you’re truly connected to your breath
Okay, so how do I do that?
1. Slow down: Rushing through reps disconnects you from your body. Try moving a bit slower so you can actually feel the movement.
2. Check your breath: Are you holding it, or letting it guide your motion? Breath helps stabilize and power each exercise. Exhale on the effort, then inhale.
3. Release unnecessary tension: Notice where you’re gripping (like your neck or jaw). Can you release that tension?
4. Focus on one thing at a time: Pick one cue to work on; maybe alignment, maybe core activation, and concentrate on it for the full exercise.
5. Reflect after your workout: Ask yourself: What felt different today? What did I notice? Awareness deepens through reflection.
One of the easiest ways to bring awareness into your practice is with guidance from a certified instructor. On my platform, you get expert cues for awareness and every movement at a fraction of the cost of in-studio classes.
How will this transform my results?
When you move with awareness, you’re teaching your body how to move better. Over time, you will achieve:
Better muscle engagement
Faster results with less effort
Improved posture and alignment
Fewer injuries and aches
